Gabriel Maciá Fernández holds a Doctoral Degree in Telecommunications Engineering (1998). He is currently a Professor (Catedrático) of Telematics Engineering at the UGR's Department of Signal Theory, Telematics and Communications.

In the final year of his studies, he began his professional career as an engineer in the private sector where he worked for 8 years. During this time, he worked as a telecommunications management systems programmer (Isotrol), fibre optic network design engineer (Enditel), switching systems specialist, and trainer in the Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Department at Vodafone. In 2005 he joined the University of Granada as a Junior Lecturer (Profesor Ayudante) in the field of Telematics Engineering. In 2007 he received a European Doctorate Mention for his thesis, which was granted the Best Doctoral Thesis award by the Professional Association of Telecommunications Engineers (COIT). He became a Senior Lecturer in March 2011 and a Professor in January 2022.

Prof Maciá Fernández has lectured at the School of Computer and Telecommunication Engineering (ETSIIT) and at the Faculty of Science on undergraduate degrees related to telecommunications, computer and electronic engineering, as well as master's degrees in multimedia technologies and cybersecurity. He is a member of the UGR’s Network Engineering and Security Group (NESG - TIC233). His research focuses on cybersecurity with a special interest in intrusion detection, threat modelling and analysis, network analytics and cybersecurity, ethical hacking techniques, and identity systems. He is a member of the National Cybersecurity Forum and also collaborates with the Digital Agency of the Regional Government of Andalusia in the development of the Andalusian Cybersecurity Strategy. He has more than 30 publications in JCR journals and has participated in more than 50 national and international conferences, in addition to over 20 research projects. He has carried out research stays at the University of Milan (Italy) and at Northwestern University (USA).

He has held several management positions, including Deputy Director of External Affairs, and Scientific and Cultural Activities of the School of Computer and Telecommunication Engineering; Director of the UGR-specific Master's Degree on Cybersecurity; and Director of the Resource Production Centre for the Digital University (CEPRUD). In addition, he has actively collaborated with the Ministry of Education on the assessment of foreign degrees, and with the Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) on the evaluation and design of International Quality Seals.
