The University of Granada’s research potential once again features in the 2017 list of Highly Cited Researchers compiled by Clarivate Analytics, becoming the second-ranked university in Spain in terms of highly cited researchers. The ranking includes over 3,300 of the top researchers in the world in 22 different scientific fields.

The UGR is second only to the University of Barcelona in the list, while the Universitat Jaime I is the third-ranked institution in Spain, with three researchers. Prestigious institutions such as Harvard University and Stanford University lead the ranking with 109 and 64 Highly Cited Researchers, respectively. There are a total of 55 Highly Cited Researchers in Spain, 26 of whom are mainly affiliated with a Spanish university.

The four UGR staff members who appear in this year’s list are Dr. Salvador García, Prof. Francisco Herrera, Prof. Enrique Herrera-Viedma and Dr. Alberto Fernández. According to the list published by Clarivate Analytics, they are among the global top 150 authors in the field of computer science. Moreover, Enrique Herrera-Viedma and Francisco Herrera are also included as Highly Cited Researchers in the field of Engineering, and are consequently the only researchers from Spain to gain a place among the global top 147 Highly Cited Researchers who appear in more than one field. Taking into account these additional considerations, the University of Granada has received a total of six mentions in this year’s list of Highly Cited Researchers.

This ranking names the top 1% of researchers in 22 main subject fields. Publications by these researchers have had the greatest impact on papers published by other researchers. In other words, they are the authors of highly cited articles which feature among the top 1% in the world in their respective fields. Thus, the list serves as an indicator of the usefulness, influence and quality of the research conducted by the scientists who appear on it.

The University of Granada’s performance in artificial intelligence is particularly noteworthy, especially in computational intelligence and data science, with highly referenced works in areas such as computing with words, consensus, group decision-making, recommender systems, machine learning, data preprocessing and big data.

Data from this list will be used in other university rankings such as the renowned Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), which measures the research performance of universities at the international level.
